TOP 7 VOTE-OFF:
I nailed the banishment of Stefano, but Jacob goes to the Bottom 3 instead of my bold pick of Scotty. Country Boy apparently has enough juice to fight off the Go First Curse. Know what else he has, as displayed when the boys knocked out a Coldplay tune? Versatility! He’s clearly talented, but he has thus far displayed a stylistic range from A to B (or as the old joke goes, he can do both kinds of music, country AND western).
The other group number featured Haley and Lauren, joined by the equally feminine Jacob and Stefano on Train’s annoying “Hey Soul Sister.” (You have to give me some room on Train. Go get their genius first album, from 1998. From “Meet Virginia” through every other track, Pat Monahan and the boys were the definition of cool. That lasted about two years.)
So what happens now? Carole King night! Jacob and Haley have both been in the Bottom 3 twice. One presumes they will return, joined perhaps by Lauren, who has failed to live up to her audition potential. Or Casey could always go weird on us and freak out the voting public.
For tomorrow night, we get the return of Crystal Bowersox, who for all I know has been working at a Denny’s in Toledo. I loved that girl last year. We’ll see what she brings. Bruno Mars will also fill the pop diva segment filled last week by Katy Perry.
A word about Ms. Perry. Her material is great. She joins Gaga and Ke$ha with some of the catchiest pop around. And it seems she is trying to out-Gaga Gaga with the ridiculous outfit for “E.T.” But one thing was for sure: she was lip-syncing. How do I know? Because it did not suck. In the studio, she is great. I have not seen a good live vocal from her, EVER. So thanks for that decision.
